📌Let's face it, Employee appreciation is a cornerstone of a thriving workplace. Studies show that recognized employees are more motivated, productive, and engaged, leading to benefits like improved retention, customer satisfaction, and innovation…among other things.
The Challenge
Reimagining Recognition
💡‘How might we’ create a recognition system that fosters a culture of frequent, personalized appreciation with tangible rewards, replacing the current impersonal and ineffective approach?
In simpler terms,
‘How might we’ make saying "good job" at work more fun and meaningful for everyone?
My Solution
The name "Free Lunch" was chosen for its immediate relatability and symbolic meaning. In everyday life, offering someone a "free lunch" signifies a kind gesture of appreciation. We often treat friends, colleagues, or family to lunch as a way of expressing gratitude or acknowledging their efforts.
The app translates this familiar concept into a digital realm. While the "lunch" itself isn't literally provided, the app promotes the act of giving and receiving appreciation by translating it into a tangible reward – actual cash. This cash reward becomes a substitute for the traditional "free lunch," a clear symbol of value and appreciation for a job well done.
The name also avoids technical jargon, making it easily understood by a broad audience within the company.
Here's how the Free Lunch App changes things
Instant Recognition - Anyone could become a hero by:
Nominating a coworker for a Free Lunch.
Sending a quick message highlighting their achievements.
Sending them a “Free Lunch”. Either Single, Double, Triple or Quadruple.
Meaningful Appreciation and Reward - The message and “free lunch” sent allows for:
The "free lunch" translated to real cash, offering tangible appreciation for a job well done.
A coworker receiving impactful, personalized recognition and can easily express words of thanks.
Giving a coworker specific praise.
Own an organization or a company?
The "Free Lunch" app lets companies set the real-cash value of a "lunch" reward when setting up an account. Companies can then offer different levels of appreciation (Single, Double, Triple, or Quadruple Lunch) by multiplying the base "lunch" value. This keeps things simple for users but allows companies to customize rewards.
The Future of Recognition?
I think the future of recognition shouldn't be about empty gestures, but about fostering a culture of appreciation that empowers employees - always!
Lessons Learned.
This case study, though hypothetical, serves as a testament to the power of well-designed recognition programs in creating a more engaged and productive work environment.
Despite the time crunch, the app was met with initial enthusiasm by a range of individuals.
Limited time constraints meant relying on desk research, a delicious but potentially risky recipe for user-focused design. This approach forced some educated guesses about user needs, which could introduce a few lumps into a final product…but throgh user-testing could eventually fly!
